St Joseph’s is focusing on engaging students in reading through a program called Reading Angels, which has already resulted in improved reading levels for students across the school.
The Reading Angels program is based on research from The Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, as well as other institutions, that indicates that increased exposure to reading improves academic outcomes for children regardless of social, racial or socio-economic boundaries.
Students read at their ascertained level 3 mornings per week to peer coaches from Year 5/6 who have volunteered their time and who are assisted by teachers and community volunteers.
The Reading Angels program runs every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings beginning at 8:15am.
