Sorry Day – Kenneth Watson-Cuttler Awardhttp://www.stjosephsmurgon.qld.edu.au/News Events/Pages/Sorry-Day-–-Kenneth-Watson-Cutler-Award.aspxSorry Day – Kenneth Watson-Cuttler Award<div>Congratulations to Duncan Cobbo who received the Kenneth-Watson Cuttler Award at our Sorry Day liturgy for consistently including others and fostering reconciliation. Chanel received this award because she has shown outstanding effort in the following areas:<br></div><div><br></div><div>1.<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Treats all people as equals to himself – not judging others based on their race, culture, school work or family circumstances.</div><div><br></div><div>2.<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Takes responsibility for his own actions towards others. Treats everyone with truth and respect and, without being prompted, says sorry for mistakes made and hurt caused to others.</div><div><br></div><div>3.<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Advocates for reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians through modelling the attributes of truth, respect, understanding and forgiveness.</div><div><br></div><div>4.<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Loves and accepts others for their differences.</div><div><br></div><div>The Cuttlers travel to Murgon each year for Sorry Day to present the award and share the story of Kenneth Watson-Cuttler with the children to inspire them to never give up.<br></div>
New school bus creates opportunities for rich learning experienceshttp://www.stjosephsmurgon.qld.edu.au/News Events/Pages/New-school-bus-creates-opportunities-for-rich-learning-experiences.aspxNew school bus creates opportunities for rich learning experiences<div>St Joseph’s students have been on some exciting excursions this term on our new Fuso Rosa 24 seater bus. The new bus has enabled the teachers to take students out into the community for some rich learning experiences. Some of these include visiting the Ration Shed, Gumnut Place, Dingo Creek and the Lions Park.</div><div><br></div><div>The Year 6 students visited the Ration Shed where Uncle Eric spoke to the students about the history of Cherbourg Aboriginal Settlement and the experiences of people in this time. Students enjoyed reading and looking at images on the decade-by-decade timeline and watching a video about the early days.</div><div><br></div><div>The Year 5 students visited Gumnut Place where they learnt about kitchen health and safety as part of the Health unit at school. Students were given the opportunity to package their own biscuits using Gumnut Place's special equipment. They learnt safe food handling and hygiene practices when preparing food and enjoyed sampling some of the wonderful delights.</div><div><br></div><div>The Prep class visited Dingo Creek and Lions Park as part of their language experience in English. Students had been reading The Magic Hat by Mem Fox which is set in a park. The Preps enjoyed visiting two different parks in our community and comparing those parks to the parks in the story. Students enjoyed wearing their own magic hats and pretending they were in the story.<br></div>
Preps exceed reading benchmarkhttp://www.stjosephsmurgon.qld.edu.au/News Events/Pages/Preps-exceed-reading-benchmark.aspxPreps exceed reading benchmark<div>The Prep students have settled into school well and have been working hard to improve their reading and literacy skills. We have many Preps who are at or past the Prep benchmark for reading. Many of the Prep students are reading well and meeting the PM benchmark of Level 5, which is expected by the end of Prep with some students exceeding this expectation. Layla, Emmet, Tanner, Levi, Riley, Emmett and Aurora have achieved over the benchmark of 5, with Riley and Aurora at a level 13.<br></div><div><br></div><div>The students are engaged in twice daily reading, guided reading, daily writing and oral language experiences. They have also been working hard to learn their Magic 300 words. The students are learning literacy skills using the five contexts for learning: </div><div><br></div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>focused learning and teaching;</div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>routines and transitions;</div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>play;</div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>real life situations; and</div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>investigations.</div><div><br></div><div>These contexts are powerful for learning because they enable children to use their skills and understandings as capable learners, have ownership of their learning, promote positive dispositions, and provide opportunities for learning associated with the curriculum as well as learning through choice. These learning contexts also enable links to be made with the children’s interests, knowledge and family and community experiences.<br></div>
