Arthur Conlon Art Experiencehttp://www.stjosephsmurgon.qld.edu.au/News Events/Pages/Arthur-Conlon-Art-Experience.aspxArthur Conlon Art ExperienceRenowned Indigenous artist Arthur Conlon visited St Joseph’s this term and provided the students with an unforgettable art experience. Arthur spent a day working with the students instructing them how to do pastel drawings of turtles, which they were then able to take home. Arthur, with the assistance of students, also painted the school’s wall mural and totems. The animals on the wall mural are significant because they are the class totems that follow each class through school. Arthur spent time talking with the students about his experiences at school and life in the army. He also spoke about how education is the most important thing for a successful future. <div><br> </div> <div>Arthur was born in Cherbourg and is a descendant of the Wakka Wakka tribe. He started painting at the age of nine by studying the traditional techniques of his uncles. He completed Year 12 at Murgon SHS and is now a successful artist with his paintings in galleries across Australia and internationally. Arthur visits schools around Australia and is an inspiration to students and staff.</div>
Remarkable Momentshttp://www.stjosephsmurgon.qld.edu.au/News Events/Pages/Remarkable-Moments.aspxRemarkable Moments<div>Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) has developed an initiative called Excellent Learning and Teaching with the purpose of improving the literacy level of every student. The program also helps to build the capacity of classroom teachers to improve their impact on student learning as each student’s success and wellbeing is at the heart of our mission as educators. As part of the initiative students are rewarded for remarkable achievements in literacy and their photo and certificate are displayed on the Remarkable Moments Achievement Wall. Leaders from BCE will be visiting St Joseph’s in Term 4 to join in a special celebration assembly where students will be congratulated for their remarkable achievements this year.  <br></div> <div><br> </div> <div>One way we are putting the Excellent Learning and Teaching initiative into practice is through Learning Walks and Talks where the students are asked five questions by staff about their literacy learning:</div> <div><br> </div> <div>1.<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>What are you learning? (Learning Intentions)</div> <div>2.<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>How are you going? (Success Criteria)</div> <div>3.<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>How do you know? (Feedback)</div> <div>4.<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>How can you improve? (Goal Setting)</div> <div>5.<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Where can you get help? (Disposition)</div> <div><br> </div> <div>We ask these questions to ensure students know what they are learning so we can improve literacy. We also work with the students to maximise every opportunity to consolidate reading strategies through multiple practice reading sessions, guided reading and focused literacy time which targets activities based on student learning needs.</div> <div><br> </div> <div>There are so many wonderful stories of growth and learning success coming from our classes at St Joseph’s. Not only have the teachers worked tirelessly to provide engaging, thought-provoking lessons each day, our students have continued to challenge themselves to be better in their learning.</div> <div><br> </div>
Cultural Immersionshttp://www.stjosephsmurgon.qld.edu.au/News Events/Pages/School-Immersions.aspxCultural Immersions<div>St Joseph’s regularly host immersion programs for students from other schools as part of an ongoing commitment to building collaborative relationships between city schools and rural schools. Immersion programs provide visiting students with an opportunity to connect with a regional school and to deepen their understanding of Indigenous culture by immersing in the community. The demand for Indigenous immersions is so high that St Joseph’s has restricted the number of immersions it hosts to maintain a healthy balance and minimal impact on its students.</div> <div> <br></div> <div>St Joseph’s hosts seven immersion programs per year involving students from six Brisbane based schools including St Rita’s College Clayfield, All Hallows’ School Brisbane City, St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace, Trinity College Beenleigh, Carmel College Thornlands, and Mt Maria College Petrie, as well as Marist College Eastwood in New South Wales.</div> <div><br> </div> <div>The immersion programs usually run from 3 days to a week and the visiting students spread their time between helping St Joseph’s students with their school work, playing with them during the breaks, and helping with school projects such as mural painting or gardening. The visiting students who participate in the immersions sleep at St Joseph’s and use the school’s facilities to prepare meals. </div> <div><br> </div> <div>Recently the students from Marist College Eastwood supplied some of the St Joseph’s students with soccer balls, soccer boots and athletics shirts. They also helped with the school’s sleepout for the homeless night to develop awareness of homelessness and raise money for the homeless. Students hunted around the school for food, water, boxes and other materials to make shelters with the help of the Marist College students.</div> <div><br> </div> <div>St Rita’s College students also recently participated in a week long annual immersion at St Joseph’s. The St Rita’s students donated boxes of books they had purchased. They also hosted St Joseph’s Year 5 and 6 students, housing them, taking them to the Ekka, helping them with science experiments and escorting them back to St Joseph’s all free of charge because of the ongoing connections we have made with them. At Christmas, students from St Rita’s send a Christmas card and candy cane to every student. These connections greatly benefit both the visiting school and the students at St Joseph’s. </div> <div><br></div>
