Learning is a Lifelong Pursuithttp://www.stjosephsmurgon.qld.edu.au/News Events/Pages/Learning-is-a-Lifelong-Pursuit.aspxLearning is a Lifelong Pursuit<div>Recently the leadership team consisting of the Principal, Assistant Principal of Religious Education and the Primary Learning Leader all graduated from their Masters of Educational Leadership. This 12 subject course was a research driven, practical program completed over a few years and enabled them to gain valuable knowledge and enhance their leadership skills. This Masters of Educational Leadership was achieved through the Australian Catholic University. <br></div><div><br></div><div>Brisbane Catholic Education requires all teachers wishing to pursue a career in leadership to obtain a Masters level of education. When moving into a leadership position, teachers must be working towards the Masters qualification with the expectation of completing the study over a suggested five year period. It would have taken considerable dedication to be working full time and studying for a Masters qualification. Mrs Dennis expressed that while it was not easy balancing children, family, work and study she enjoyed the challenge. Mrs Dennis also believes it provided a positive message for her own children about the importance of continued learning and being a lifelong learner.</div><div><br><br></div><p><br></p>
Making Books Come Alivehttp://www.stjosephsmurgon.qld.edu.au/News Events/Pages/Learning-Alive-Makes-Books-More-Exciting.aspxMaking Books Come Alive<div>This term, the Prep’s and Year 1 students are engaging in an active literacy approach supported by the Education Officers from Brisbane Catholic Education. An active literacy approach aims to help students think about, process and verbalise what they are reading and learning by immersing them in activities based on the themes in the books.</div><div><br></div><div>Apart from immersing students in the context/text model of learning they are engaging in the incursions and excursions to give them a platform to co-create their own text and write their own books. This type of literacy learning is not only engaging and fun, but the students get to immerse themselves in a rich literacy experience and then delight in creating the text to read and show others.</div><div><br></div><div>The Preps enjoyed an incursion at school to find the sheep from the story book, ‘Where is the green sheep?’. They ventured around the school in small groups supported by a teacher or school officer reading and following clues and then recording the places they explored on their way to finding their group’s sheep. They then co-created text about their adventure. </div><div>The Year 1 Students enjoyed a fantastic excursion around Murgon and Cherbourg. Some of the places they visited were the Post Office, Fire Station, Police Station, Library and Cherbourg Hospital and stopped at BP dam for lunch before returning to school. A rich day of learning and exploring was had by everyone, and the students gained valuable knowledge in preparation for transforming that knowledge into text. The students are now making a book about their adventure!</div><div>The students would like to say a special thank you to the businesses and community services for allowing them to visit. <br></div><p><br></p>
Reaching for the starshttp://www.stjosephsmurgon.qld.edu.au/News Events/Pages/2018-Welcome.aspxReaching for the stars<div>St Joseph’s welcomed many new families and 18 new Preps to begin our 2018 learning journey. We are looking forward to helping all students reach their full potential and our teachers have thoroughly planned to meet the needs of each student. Providing our students with the support, guidance and direction they need to become confident, successful and informed students in an unknown future. <br><br></div><div>Last year we had the theme of ‘Making a Difference’ and our results reflected the effort from staff and students. We successfully achieved our literacy goal and this is reflected in the following quote from the Deputy Director of Brisbane Catholic Education, Doug Ashleigh: </div><div><br></div><div>“Progress against your stated SMART Goal showed significant growth and achievement. Congratulations and well done! Progress with your benchmarks is outstanding. The outstanding work evident in the 2017 results is quite remarkable and a great testament to the commitment and to the belief that ‘every student can learn with sufficient time and support.” </div><div><br></div><div>This year we extend this to encapsulate ‘Reaching for the Stars’. We will be focusing on helping students to have a positive growth mindset and encouraging them to have high expectations for themselves. <br></div>
